This warm and inviting English countryside-inspired home designed by West of Main Design is filled with memorable moments, located in Ottawa, Ontario. The clients had a large property where they wanted to build their dream, forever home. They were looking for a European aesthetic, where the designers brought in classic elements with modern design. They were inspired by the property’s landscape and wanted the home to complement its surroundings, using the natural surroundings and color tones to essentially blend into the landscape.
The clients are a young family who loves to entertain and has a lot of friends and family. The designers took this into consideration with the layout of the home in order to accommodate their lifestyle and elevate their entertaining. They also wanted to make the most of the view on the property and be mindful of the different rooms that would have access to the view. This resulted in the kitchen and living room being open concept with each other and focusing on the view and spectacular sunsets.

For the exterior facade, the designers were inspired by English countryside architecture and wanted the home to have a lot of dimension as well as beautiful roof pitches. In terms of finishes, the designers were intentional with where they were placing the stone and where they were placing the siding. For the color scheme, they selected muted tones that would blend into the landscape.
For the entrance to this English countryside-inspired home, they wanted to make it a true statement with its custom double wood doors. As you step inside, you are greeted with a beautiful view out towards the water. With ten-foot ceilings in the entrance, they wanted to make it feel nice and cozy by adding reclaimed wood beams to the ceiling. On the console table is the Gaios Table Lamp by AERIN for Visual Comfort.
Above: The entryway flooring features a brick-style tile, which was installed in a herringbone pattern — lending a cobblestone, courtyard-style feel.
Above: In the living room, the fireplace stone is Natural Limestone from Indiana. The flooring throughout the home is a 7-inch plank European French oak, character-grade, sourced from France. It has a custom stain finish.
Above: The living room has the best view in the home, which is framed through double-height windows. To balance this, the fireplace is in scale and proportion to the ceiling height. To bring a cozy feel into this space, reclaimed wood clads the ceiling, repeated from the entryway. The wood is stained in a chocolatey-brown hue to bring the outdoors inside.
The furnishings throughout this home were sourced from West of Main Shoppe.

Above: In the kitchen, the owner’s wishlist was integrated appliances, a beautiful focal point, light and bright but with moody and glamorous elements. The space features a European aesthetic with furniture details for the millwork instead of regular kitchen cabinetry. The light fixtures include Visual Comfort’s Ruhlmann Pendants and Clemente Library Lights.
Above: When it came to the finishes, the designers mixed and matched. This included stained oak cabinets mixed with ebony-stained oak cabinets — Flint AF-560 by Benjamin Moore. The hardware was also mixed, with black hardware on the light oak cabinets and unlacquered brass on the darker cabinets to make them pop. The plumbing fixtures are also unlacquered brass that, over time, will develop a beautiful patina.
Above: The feature in this space is the stove wall, which was designed to be dramatic. It is framed out with drywall and recessed in. The entire hood and range wall feature a glazed, artisanal-style black tile that reflects the beautiful natural light that streams in. The tile is from Ciot.
With the open-concept living and kitchen area, the designers ensured they made use of all available space. With this in mind, the stove wall was brought forward and the butler’s pantry is hidden behind. The galley-style butler’s pantry provides a nice flow that is accessible from both sides. This also helped to create a beautiful, symmetrical focal point in the kitchen.
Above: This moody butler’s pantry is just as beautiful as the kitchen, with cabinets stained in an ebony black — Flint AF-560 by Benjamin Moore. The countertops are a walnut butcher block to make it feel warm and cozy. It offers plenty of storage.
Above: The dining room is located at the front of the house, therefore it does not get as much natural light as the back of the house. To address this, the designers created a moody atmosphere in this space. The walls feature beautiful wainscoting in a sage green hue, which is also applied to the trim and ceiling to envelop you in the space. The doors can be closed off in this space when entertaining. There is also an integrated sound system.
Above: On the buffet in the dining room is the Beton Table Lamp by Kelly Wearstler.
Above: Another feature on the homeowner’s wishlist was a music room, somewhere where she could play music, be inspired, and get creative. It feels like its own space yet flows well with the other rooms that are adjacent to it. To achieve a moody feel in this space, the designers added a deep blue limewash to all of the walls, including the ceiling and trim so that you are enveloped in the room.
Above: The powder room features an artisanal subway tile in a beautiful sage, olive green hue. The texture on the walls and the playful penny tile flooring add to the English countryside feel.
Above: The owner’s suite includes the bedroom, the closet, and the en-suite bathroom. There is also a balcony, which is all in its own wing at the back of the house. It provides a relaxing environment to end your day.

Above: There are lots of windows in the bedroom, accented with linen drapery that is used as blackout curtains at night, which is also motorized.
Above: The bedroom also features a recessed morning bar, integrated into an arched opening for an added touch of luxury. There is also an integrated refrigerator for coffee creamer, water bottles,

Above: The glass-enclosed shower features an artisanal white subway tile to create a serene and relaxing feel. This space offers a large ledge instead of a niche for storing showering essentials.
Above: The bathroom features a dual vanity along with a linen closet for plenty of functional storage. The modern vanity features 4-inch thick countertops and unlaquered brass plumbing fixtures. The light fixture on the wall is the Julius Sconce Alabaster and Antique Brass sconce from Arteriors Home.
Above: A private balcony just off the owner’s bedroom suite features glass railings so as not to detract from the views. The railings are set into reclaimed wood beams.
Above: The beautiful exterior facade features old world-style stone walls.
Above: The laundry room features a mix of timeless yet playful details. It is located upstairs with dormer windows that bring in an abundance of natural light.
Above: The kid’s wing features built-ins with an attractive arched entry that can be seen on the lower level. The built-ins include pull-out laundry hampers and drawers for plenty of storage. The kid’s wing has a Jack and Jill style bathroom, so each bedroom has its own vanity, which is off of a bathroom where you have a tub and a toilet.
