Crafted as a custom design by GRAHAM Architecture in partnership with Michael Fullen Design Group, this modern house finds its idyllic perch atop a bluff overlooking Newport Harbor in Newport Beach, California. This expansive 7,000-square-foot, two-story dwelling boasts breathtaking views of both the Pacific Ocean and Newport Bay, along with distant views of Catalina and Balboa Islands.
Over the course of 16 months, this newly constructed home was executed to embody an organic, timeless, and modern aesthetic. This family’s dream home, once owned by a retired professional baseball player, was imbued with a sense of warmth and livability to create an inviting haven.
The inspiration for the project was drawn from the homeowner’s collection of materials he gathered from a walk on the beach: sand, a piece of driftwood, and some pebbles. As a result, a natural, organic palette was formed and applied throughout the home: rift-cut white oak for the ceilings stained in the same hue as the driftwood.
Limestone flooring in a sea-grass hue mimics that of the ocean floor, while the color of the sand is picked up in the split-faced Texas limestone used on both the interior columns and the exterior facade.
The floor plan of this blufftop home was arranged to take advantage of the site, with each room offering guests a panoramic view of the ocean. This was done by placing two-bedroom suites on each level, dividing them with open public spaces in the center core.
Almost the entire back of the dwelling creates a seamless connection between indoors and out through 30-foot spans of sliding glass and bifold doors. To further define the rear facade, the architect designed a dramatic 75-foot-long copper roof that cantilevers over the rear patios to help protect from the elements.
What We Love: The light palette of materials that was selected, reminiscent of the beach, creates a nice sense of calm and relaxation. The clean-lined, contemporary furnishings in neutral hues provide a comfortable atmosphere that does not detract from the beautiful scenery through the large expanses of glass. Upon entry into this modern house that overlooks the Newport Harbor, there is a seamless connection between indoors and out, capturing nature and creating a very livable home to enjoy for years to come.

Sophisticated, drought-tolerant landscaping was designed to match the interior aesthetic. An infinity-edge swimming pool seems to spill over the hillside, helping to tie together the view, the water, and the contemporary aesthetic of this residence.
