This modern lakeside cottage was designed by Pearson Design Group, nestled along the rocky shores of Flathead Lake in Bigfork, Montana. The property was on a steep incline and had several water issues which made it a challenge to construct this home. After a site visit, the architects conceptualized a five-level vertical camp that begins at the top of the hillside and meanders its way down — via stairs and bridges — to the lakefront cabin.
The first issue to address was how to connect the dwelling with the lake when there is a 60-foot vertical drop. PImmensely vital, the pre-construction planning phase played a pivotal role. Nearly a year’s worth of effort was invested in establishing the fundamental infrastructure, which encompassed intricate water management due to the presence of numerous springs on the property, as well as the meticulous construction of foundations and retaining walls.

Beginning at the top of the hillside is the main house that encompasses just over 3,000 square feet of living space with three bedrooms and three-and-a-half bathrooms. The lakefront cabin offers 1,000 square feet and features a bedroom, a sleeping porch, one-and-a-half bathrooms, a rooftop deck, a kitchenette, and an outdoor kitchen — perfect for entertaining during the summer months. For these lucky homeowners, it’s like having two different houses on the same property, one for the summer to reside by the lake and one at the top for the cold winter months.
Created using the shou sugi ban technique, charred wood timbers form an artistic privacy screen at the home’s entrance level, resembling a striking piece of artwork.
