Charlie & Co. Design has completely reimagined this stunning 1941 Colonial-style home nestled on almost an acre in the Rolling Green neighborhood of Edina, Minnesota. This new design ties together 80+ years of various additions, bringing more daylight and a cohesive vision to this refreshed residence.
The homeowners were drawn to the property for its traditional architecture, lush landscaping, and the five bedrooms that are located on the upper level — enough space for the owners and their four children. Continue below to see the rest of this family home transformation…

What We Love: This colonial-style home in Minnesota was completely overhauled to meet the lifestyle needs of its inhabitants. The transformation enhances the natural light throughout the home while preserving charming details that pay homage to this home’s past. Decorating with antiques not only adds to the overall character of the home but gives it an individual style that is warm, inviting, and timeless.

Above: This inviting entryway was reimagined with beautiful millwork, a chinoiserie cabinet, and a hidden jib door (a door made flush with a wall) that leads into a beautiful powder bath (pictured below).
Above: The foyer is framed by recessed paneling and leaded glass windows.
Above: The powder bath features Harlem Toile de Jouy hand-screened wallpaper, adding a touch of whimsy to this space.
The homeowner did not want her home to have the typical traditional Colonial style aesthetic. She opted for classic yet unconventional, decorating with heirloom pieces such as her mother’s chinoiserie cabinet and a sideboard she had inherited from her grandmother. The designer mainly sourced antiques from Minneapolis-based Loft Antiques.
Above: In the family room, a wall of built-ins was replaced with sideboards and antique mirrors for beautiful symmetry. A wall in this space was removed, which necessitated a new steel beam. To conceal this beam, the project team added a coffered ceiling for a timeless appeal.
Above: This sunken living room steps up into the light-filled kitchen, which features a cozy breakfast nook.
Above: In the kitchen, light floods in from a pyramid-shaped skylight. The custom-designed island is comprised of walnut and burled African walnut veneer, created by local cabinet designer Modern Design.
Above: This kitchen features a clean aesthetic— intricate wood detail, black and gold elements to punctuate crisp white, all brightened with natural light. It’s a fresh take on timelessness.
Above: The kitchen was designed to be highly functional for this large, active family who loves to entertain. There is plenty of storage in this space, with much of it hidden. This includes a large pantry wall, an additional oven integrated into the island, and an appliance garage nestled within a beautifully crafted mirrored cabinet reminiscent of an elegant linen press.
Above: A man and kid cave is situated above the garage and is also accessible from the upstairs hallway where all five of the bedrooms are located. This space includes a golf simulator, a shuffleboard, and a TV area. The upstairs area also includes a new laundry room and a bathroom for the kids to use.
