Rehkamp Larson Architects has completely reimagined this beautiful old house that is situated in a vibrant neighborhood of Minneapolis, Minnesota. The structure has undergone several additions and renovations over the years which has left awkward living spaces, pinch points in the floor plan, mixed expression on the exterior facades, and not enough space for a growing family.
However, the old house also boasted some fabulous details, a dramatic built-in dining room buffet, and good bones at its core. The old additions were removed and the original house was extended to make way for a new kitchen and family room on the main level, a larger owner’s bedroom on the second level, along with an additional bedroom and bathroom on the third level.

The house now has more space where it’s needed and less space where it’s not, smoother connections between the interior and exterior, and a coherent massing relating to the original house and neighborhood.
Old and new elements are carefully integrated into the design, finish, and skillful construction and are so much more than the sum of their parts – providing a light-filled, modern vernacular house in the city.
What We Love: This old house in Minneapolis boasts bright and airy living spaces thanks to a major overhaul. The home was thoughtfully transformed to meet the lifestyle needs of its inhabitants, providing additional space where needed for the family to live comfortably and with greater functionality. Overall, we are loving this newly refreshed home, especially the beautiful wraparound porch that will be perfect for relaxing in nature.
