A Chicago home gets a fabulous update with indoor-outdoor living

dSPACE Studio has reimagined this fabulous two-story modern home that was constructed in 1972, located in Old Town, a neighborhood in Chicago, Illinois. This dwelling was originally designed by architect Bruce Graham who worked at Skidmore, Owings & Merrill and was responsible for the design of notable buildings such as the John Hancock Center and Sears Tower.

The structure had remained unaltered by the original owner until the current homeowner purchased it. The exterior had deteriorated beyond repair, while the interior was in need of a newly configured floor plan that would accommodate the ownerโ€™s lifestyle needs, including flexible space to host parties of 100 people.

The scope of this project entailed the restoration of the exterior facade in accordance with landmark guidelines, completely opening up the interior, and enhancing natural light into the space all while respecting the existing architecture.

The program requirements of this 4,300-square-foot residence included four bedrooms, three-and-a-half bathrooms (the original was three bedrooms and three bathrooms), two bars, a new kitchen, spa-like bathrooms, and a landscaped yard with a strong indoor/outdoor connection.

The entire residence was reconstructed. On the exterior, you will find new rough-cut cedar siding that was selected to perfectly match the original specs, while layered landscaping complements the architecture.

The floor plan was reimagined around an existing double-volume atrium that features a glass roof.

The original steel staircase in this home was inspired by a 1951 Mies van der Rohe design for the Arts Club of Chicago and was beautifully restored by the architects. It leads up to the second level where a new owner’s bedroom suite was created from what was once a family room.

Interior walls were reconfigured, while new herringbone flooring helps to visually connect the open living space.

The original fireplace was relocated to a side wall which helped to expand views of the garden. A sculptural 18-foot surround of hand-selected Kenya Black marble from Italy was incorporated into the fireplace design. This marble was repeated in other areas of the home for artful detailing in the gallery, atrium, and dining areas.

A lofted media space was created from an area that was originally used for storage. It features a new glass railing system that provides sweeping views over the atrium and living room below.
