This breathtaking four-season lakefront cabin retreat was designed by Epikos Land Planning + Architecture, located on Blackhawk Lake in McCall, Idaho. The original home on the property had been enjoyed by the owners for year-round outdoor activities. However, the original dwelling on the property was a log home kit that had been constructed in 1999 and had not aged well.
The homeowners desired a complete overhaul of the structure, along with an addition so that their children and grandchildren could create lasting memories. Instead of building toward the lake, the project team opted to extend the cabin on either side.
The idea was to elongate the dwelling so the owners could enjoy the lake lifestyle much more freely. There is now an abundance of indoor/outdoor living spaces and every room in the home enjoys a tranquil view of the lake.

The goal was to create a family-friendly home, so the team reorganized the interior into three principal living zones: main living spaces on the first level; an upper-level kid-friendly escape that includes a loft, bunk room, and a deck; an expanded lower-level basement walkout that encompasses a TV room/teenager hangout.

Living spaces were designed to maximize views of the lake, with one of the new wings of the dwelling encompassing the main bedroom suite. The other wing houses the gathering room, a cafe-like space that features an expansive banquette to accommodate overflow from the dining room. This space functions as a more intimate living area.

It was imperative to create a harmonious flow between the old and new living spaces, as the project team did not want anything to feel like it was part of an addition. The original structure remained intact, however, the addition provided an extra 1,600 square feet of living space. There is also an expanded deck and additional patios to enhance the outdoor living experience.
Above: The interior was completely transformed, including the overhaul of the pine logs. The designer applied a blackish-brown stain to the logs to achieve a more dramatic aesthetic. For the original river rock fireplace, the entire wall was re-faced with four giant slabs of Sea Pearl quartzite with a leather finish sourced from Mesa Tile & Stone. The Swivel Chairs are from Precedent Furniture, upholstered in a chenille fabric from Robert Allen. The chandelier overhead is by Currey & Company.
Above: To flow with the owner’s mountain modern style aesthetic, the team added a metal staircase along with custom cabinets in the kitchen wrapped in cold-rolled steel to layer in an industrial vibe. The dining area features a whitewashed oak dining table and Noir Laredo Dining Chairs in teak and woven seagrass, topped with sheepskin throws from Surya. The light fixture is by Arteriors.
