This impressive home in the Arizona desert embraces the rocky terrain

modern-desert-home-exterior

This impressive modern desert home was designed by Kendle Design Collaborative in collaboration with Ownby Design, located in Paradise Valley, Arizona. The structure is tucked behind a rocky outcropping on the property.

Following the meandering driveway, this hidden jewel reveals itself through the careful placement and layout of the residence which preserves and celebrates this natural feature rather than imposing itself upon the rock formation.

The exterior facade features a simple material palette of split face block and integral color stucco, melding the dwelling into the hillside. Spanning across a submerged main entry and garage, views are maximized with floor-to-ceiling glass from the open plan living spaces and cantilevered office.

To increase the natural open space on the property, the layout of this home is reversed, where the main living spaces are located on the upper level and the private bedrooms encompass the lower level.

What We Love: Tucked into the Arizona desert, this spectacular home maximizes views at every angle through expansive walls of glazing. The floor plan layout was cleverly conceptualized to take advantage of the surroundings, with the arrangement of the main living spaces on the upper level. We are especially loving the fantastic indoor-outdoor connection and the expansive outdoor living spaces for lounging and entertaining.

The expansive walls of glazing in the great room utilize glass fins as the main structural support element to minimize view obstruction. This defines a circulation area to the family room and kitchen which features multi-slide glass doors that disappear behind the fireplace or stack to one side, blurring indoor-outdoor boundaries.

Designing the pool above the natural grade helps to create the appearance of a negative edge while reflecting panoramic vistas beyond.

visually this house is quite impressive. the exterior design fits well in the environment. i’m not a fan of pools, but the pool in this house works well in this design. relying on glass fins for structural support seems kind of dicey to me, especially for such large areas. the chandelier in the walk-in closet seems oddly out of place in this house, as does the circular red sofa. what would i change? a)get rid of the idiotic “living room with a kitchen in it” concept; b)use wood floors (darker wood than what is used for the stairs); c)get rid… Read more »
