This rustic family lake house was reimagined by Smith & Vansant Architects, nestled on the Western end of the picturesque Lake Fairlee, Vermont. Originally constructed as a seasonal boarding house in circa 1910, this five-bedroom dwelling was in need of a complete overhaul, furthered by significant storm-blown tree damage.

The architects renovated this home in stages by removing and closely replicating the details of the existing in a new weatherized, updated, and wheelchair-accessible lakeside abode. The new dwelling, and associated garage, take full advantage of the benefits and confines of the site with an inviting entry court, a long lake vista, and a broad lakeshore porch, docks, and terraces.

The main living spaces on the first level are arranged along the lakefront and open out onto a generous screened-in porch. The need for wheelchair accessibility provided for large and gracious spaces and a close connection between indoors and outdoors. A first-floor guest suite doubles as a private office while three bedrooms, a study, and a vaulted ‘bunk-room’ open off a top-lit central stair hall.

What We Love: This family lake house provides scenic views of the water, which is ultra relaxing from the large screened porch. The renovation of this home has produced warm and inviting living spaces that will be enjoyed for generations to come. We are especially loving the cozy family room with its stone-clad fireplace and connection to the screen porch with tranquil views of the lake.
