This contemporary hillside home was designed by Chadbourne + Doss Architects, located in the Queen Anne neighborhood of Seattle, Washington. For their new dwelling, the owners requested an adventurous sanctuary inspired by the forest, sea, and skies of the Salish Sea. They also wanted their home to age well and support their active lifestyle while adapting to them as they age.
Perched on a corner site, this 5,500-square-foot residence opens to the westerly views of the sea and the Olympic Mountains. A central entry courtyard encapsulates the idyllic atmosphere of the Pacific Northwest.

What We Love: This hillside home in Seattle offers its inhabitants a welcoming respite with inviting views of the Sound and Seattle skyline. Despite its modern design, the use of walnut and cedar brings warmth into the dwelling. Overall, we are loving the cantilevered viewing deck and the central courtyard with the water feature and walnut swings to create a wonderful feeling of zen.

The exterior material palette includes concrete, zinc siding, painted aluminum panel, and western red cedar. The materials were sourced for their durability and timeless character. Deep overhangs provide shelter from the elements while enabling the winter sun to penetrate deep into the dwelling.

The interior material palette is inspired by the Puget Sound forests with walnut flooring and cedar ceilings; the water with concrete, dark sintered stone, stainless steel, and blackened steel; and the sky with Bianco Treviso quartzite and white plaster finishes. The panoramic glazing invites nature inside.

To allow for optimal views, this home features high-performance windows and doors with narrow metal frames. For electrical needs, there is a photovoltaic solar array on the flat roof.
