Ward Jewell Architect has designed this gorgeous beachfront home in the style of a rural stone-clad historic 18th-century Pennsylvania farmhouse in Malibu, California. Nestled on a 2.5-acre bluff, this dwelling boasts panoramic views stretching from Paradise Cove to Catalina Island.
The property offers an unusual combination of topography, vista, and weather that inspired the design of this beautiful residence. The house was conceived as a retreat where three families could gather together. Despite the panoramic cliff top view being the dominant feature of the site, protection from the brisk northwest ocean breezes and the strong radiant sun was considered in the design.

The property is long yet relatively narrow which necessitated the final plan to be a U-shaped courtyard building where the entry from the drive court takes one through a deeply arched portal, across a green courtyard to a large Dutch door where you ultimately enter the home. The stone was quarried from the Midwest and is complemented by a steep French slate roof.
INSPIRATION: The architect researched the buildings and materials of Cotswold-style homes erected during the 1700s in Pennsylvania. With authenticity in mind, he collaborated with stone masons to achieve the historically accurate pattern and texture of the exterior walls. His interior plan is decidedly Californian with the guest suite, living and family rooms surrounding a sheltered, grassy courtyard with a pool, and several large bedroom suites, living and dining rooms, kitchen, and loggia boasting magnificent coastal views.

What We Love: This Pennsylvania stone farmhouse offers a resplendent retreat that relaxes the mind and body with its beautiful surroundings. We are loving the striking design of the exterior facade and the wonderful outdoor living spaces that are perfect for family gathering and entertaining. Interior spaces were created to be open and airy with comfortable furnishings that promote relaxation, an idyllic atmopshere for a family beach house.
