This warm and inviting empty nester home designed by PKA Architecture is located near Lake Harriet, in the southwest part of Minneapolis, Minnesota. When the owner/builder Peter Crain of Trestle Homes and his wife’s three sons left the nest, it was time to switch up their lifestyle.
They sold their family home in Edina and opted to build a smaller, modern home close to the lake. The goals for this project entailed a balance of his love for modern design and her fondness for traditional forms while assimilating into the street of predominately traditional homes.

They wished for sophisticated, right-sized interiors with room for entertaining and flexible spaces for returning kids and visiting family, with an abundance of natural light and a strong connection between indoors and out. The architects responded to the owners’ goals and the site with a sleek modern home that deftly balances a gable form and a flat-roofed form.
Floor-to-ceiling windows, sliding glass doors and a skylight helps to flood the living spaces with light, while a front patio functions as a modern “porch” to create a natural connection to the street.

What We Love: This sophisticated empty nester home was created for living, entertaining, and celebrating with family and friends. The home is spacious enough to host scores of guests on the main level with a secondary kitchen and a fabulous porch. On the second level, there are also plenty of fantastic features, including a guest room, exercise room, and our favorite, the primary suite with its rooftop patio. Overall, this is the perfect home to cater to the lifestyle needs of just two people or twenty.

The roof was created to not only collect water runoff but to keep moderate the temperature of the roof and add some visual beauty to the neighborhood.

Finished with variegated natural stone, a discreet dark gray steel roof, and a green roof, this dwelling reflects the scale and texture of the adjacent homes while bringing an exciting modern sensibility to the neighborhood.
