A split-level modern farmhouse gets fabulous makeover in Massachusetts

Michael Hally Design in collaboration with Copper Dot Interiors has reimagined this split-level modern farmhouse located in Natick, Massachusetts. This project began with taking the house down to the first-floor framing while utilizing the existing path of the stairs for navigating old and new spaces along with using it to bring natural light into the three levels of the dwelling.

The reconstructed first level now has liberating nine-foot ceilings, and the new second level is dormered and vaulted to keep the appearance of the house low on the exterior but airy and interesting on the interior. The asymmetrical grouping of dormers and gables keeps the roofline and its mojo grounded, while new projecting bays help quell the presence of the tell-tale split-level cantilever on the first level.

The house’s massing is minimized by the house’s siting. Half buried into the hillside, this home maintains a quiet, but proud presence on this established street.

The new ceiling heights provide much relief, especially the soaring great room ceiling at the request of the previously stifled and cramped homeowners. The extra ceiling height in the main living space will make all the difference in day-to-day living. Taller ceilings and cathedral ceilings enable generous window sizes and quantities to allow more natural light to flood in.

What We Love: This split-level modern farmhouse provides a newly revived home that is cohesive on both the interior and exterior. We are loving the gorgeous living room with its vaulted ceiling and abundance of natural light. Built-in window seats make the room feel cozy while providing additional space for guests or curl up with a good book with a view of nature. Overall, the project team did a fabulous job of giving this home a new life with plenty of thoughtful design enhancements.

Tell Us: What details in the renovation of this home do you find most inspiring? Let us know in the Comments, we love reading your feedback!

This is gorgeous. Can you please let me know what brand and series of windows are on this project? This is exactly what we are working towards and finding black interior and exterior windows is difficult!
