Clark Richardson Architects are responsible for the renovation and addition of a traditional house into a modern Japanese-style home nestled on a bluff overlooking Lake Austin, Texas. With past century finishes and an archaic configuration that stymied spatial interaction and expanding views, this 4,426 square foot house required a thorough rethinking.
The principal maneuver established a transversal axis, creating communication amongst the three principal communal spaces of the house: living, dining, and kitchen. This intervention also allowed for greater appreciation of the river below and hills beyond. Furthermore, private spaces were rearranged and updated to provide comfort, luxury, and spatial efficiency. On the second floor, a new ample game room added square footage to the existing house.
The owners desired a home with modern appeal and elegant finishes that reflected their tastes, and flexibility while embracing the primary element of the house – its amazing view. The home is located at the back of the property and is accessed through a grove of oak trees and beautiful landscaping.

Above: At the front entry, guests are greeted by this small water garden illuminated by a skylight. The existing home was a brick and stucco two-story dwelling and was wrapped in heavy masonry porches on both the front and rear of the residence which faces the incredible vista.
Above: The living room is a mix of Eastern and Western aesthetic influences that engage with a panoramic view of the Colorado River and the Texas Hill Country.
Above: An open concept living and dining area shows visual delineation with a change in ceiling and wall finish. The fireplace is a central focal point of this space, clad in black Venetian Plaster.
Prior to the renovation, the interiors were somewhat chaotic with disconnected living spaces and no connection to the breathtaking views beyond the property. There were very few windows facing the lake view and further separated from the outdoors by the heavy masonry colonnades on either side of the home.
What We Love: This modern Japanese-style home provides its occupants with stylish living spaces and a wonderful indoor-outdoor connection. We are especially loving the orientation of the house and the expansive windows to maximize views of the breathtaking scenery and Lake Austin. The outdoor areas are sensational, with a pool, built-in-furniture with a large overhang, and fans. Fabulous living and entertaining spaces.

Above: The kitchen is a mix of Eastern and Western influences brought together by contemporary design. A subdued color palette, rich in texture variety, gives this kitchen its character. A custom range hood clad in black Venetian Plaster takes its inspiration from the traditional Japanese aesthetic principles of wabi-sabi, which values transience and imperfection.
