Arcanum Architecture designed this beautiful farmhouse retreat for a couple looking to escape their urban lifestyle, located in Napa Valley, California. This new home was constructed on the site of an old ranch house surrounded by a historic vineyard that was first planted in the 1880s. The project team developed a two-story main house clad in knotty Western red cedar.
Also on this property is a stone-clad guest cottage that encompasses two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a kitchen, and a sitting area. The house was designed to be a gathering point, focusing on flexibility and privacy. A bright and airy great room was created to feel like a mini-hotel lobby, while the guest rooms have a resort-like feel. Touches of whimsy were added into spaces such as the bunk room.

The project team collaborated with the homeowners to create their vacation dream house, an unpretentious weekend retreat. They sought to capture the essence of the local vernacular yet in a fresh way. The design style needed to be casual and inviting but not too rustic or expected. A serene color palette flows through the interiors, inspired by nature — using blues, greens, and natural wood tones. Main living spaces were intentionally kept tranquil, so as not to detract from the surroundings.
What We Love: This wonderful farmhouse retreat in Napa Valley is the epitome of California living. The project team did a fantastic job of connecting indoor-outdoor living spaces to encourage outdoor entertaining. Outdoor spaces have a relaxed elegance while offering views of the surrounding vineyards and mountainous landscape. A serene color palette inspired by nature promotes relaxation for a family wishing to escape the stress of work and urban living.

Outdoor spaces include a swimming pool, lush landscaping, vegetable garden, and a gravel courtyard that is strung with globe lights for ambiance when alfresco dining. Olive trees and native grasses help to soften the home and meld it into the landscape.
