McDonald Architects in collaboration with Byrd Builders were commissioned to design this gorgeous Lowcountry style home that overlooks the 11th fairway of the Country Club of Charleston, South Carolina. This area of town has roots stretching back to the 18th century! The homeโs round den, featuring a circular cupola, looks out across the lawn to this fairway.
The rear of the home and its property face the tidal waters of Wappoo Creekโa quintessential Lowcountry vista the family wanted to capitalize on as much as possible. Nearly all rooms in the house take advantage of these picturesque views, and the main living space includes accordion-style glass doors that can quickly be opened to invite the outdoors in.
One room within the home, the second floorโs barrel-vaulted media and game room, stretches from the front of the house to the rear, offering sight lines to both the water and fairway.
The homeโs design has been woven around four legally protected live oaks, which required cantilevering the pool deck and strategically working visual axes along with both the breadth and depth of the site. The property was part of a Colonial Kings grant, enabling the architects to position the pool very close to the river’s high water line.
