Charred wood wraps Michigan home that celebrates its woodland setting

This woodland retreat was designed as a modern yet sophisticated home by Vici Hamp Architects, located in Three Oaks, southwest Michigan. This home includes industrial features as well as the stunning Shu Sugi Bon exterior finish. Peace and tranquility can be enjoyed throughout. Beautiful nature views were maximized in every room of this dwelling.

Embracing a midcentury style โ€” a rectangular single-story house with a flat roof โ€” this dwelling is surrounded by native trees, grasses, and ferns on an eight-acre property with a private pond. The home is sited on a slight ridge elevated from the surrounding protected wetlands, allowing an orientation that gives the building privacy from the road and permits views from the major rooms towards the nearby pond.

The homeownerโ€™s request for a modest and low-maintenance weekend home resulted in a long linear building with private master and guest suites at opposite ends of the living, dining, and kitchen area.

The post and beam structure cantilevers from the building to protect the entries and shade the floor-to-ceiling living room windows.

This 2,388 square foot residence includes two screened porches that provide protected vantages for viewing nature. The larger one, open on three sides, is located off the guest suite; a smaller screened-in patio is adjacent to the kitchen.

The exterior is clad in Shou sugi ban (charred) finished wood siding.

What We Love: This woodland home celebrates its woodsy setting with screened porches that visually connect the inside with the outside. Since this home is nestled on a sprawling property, large windows were integrated throughout, maximizes views and natural light to create a sense of tranquility.

The interior palette is simply finished with gypsum board walls and ceilings and polished concrete floors with radiant heating. The flat roof keeps the building low, allowing rainwater to be shed back to the site.

This wonderful home was originally built as a weekend getaway, nestled along Lake Michigan. A week after the construction was complete, Chicago, where their main residence is located, went into lockdown from the pandemic. The couple decided to retreat to this home as a full-time residence for quiet solitude.
