This cozy English cottage house was completely renovated for empty nesters by Jean Stoffer Design, located in East Grand Rapids, Michigan. After raising a family with four children in Chicago, the designer and her husband decided to downsize, falling in love with this modern English cottage style home.
This three-bedroom home is more quaint than grand, featuring a stylish mix of antique and contemporary decor. Most of the furnishings and even the cabinetry was sourced from the designer’s own shop, Stoffer Home.
What We Love: This English cottage is an absolute dream with stylish design elements and thoughtful details. A gorgeous white brick facade and exquisite arched oak front door welcomes you inside. The designer has done a wonderful job of preserving details throughout this old home, giving it charm and character. Overall, the aesthetics are fresh and clean as well as comfortable and collected.

In the dining room, reclaimed hardwood flooring brings inviting warmth. Above the table are a pair of geometric lanterns from Visual Comfort. An antique piece gifted from the designer’s parents is the reproduction French directoire table. The midcentury oak chairs can host a dinner party of up to eight guests, topped with burgundy velvet cushions. This table also severs as the designer’s work desk!
The interior doors of this English cottage style home are painted in Black 2132-10 | Benjamin Moore.
The built-in millwork with a walnut countertop is from the designer’s cabinetry collection, painted in London Gray.
The kitchen cabinets are by Stoffer Home Cabinetry, painted in Kensington Taupe.
The countertops are white Carrara marble, complimented by a beautiful fireclay farmhouse sink.
In the living room, the designer opted for a pair of leather Restoration Hardware club chairs instead of a larger sectional. In the winer, the chairs can be turned in to enjoy a cozy fire. Above the original brick fireplace, a chunky reclaimed wood mantel adds warmth. The floor lamp is by Kelly Wearstler.
Above: In old homes, the laundry is typically in the unfinished basement. A huge remodeling upgrade is to bring the laundry upstairs. However, finding the space can be quite challenging. In this case, the designer did not have the square footage to give the laundry its own room so she put it in a niche in the hall and made it special with lighting and art.

Above: The walls of this powder bath are painted in Tarrytown Green HC-134 | Benjamin Moore. A Carrara marble backsplash pairs nicely with the green backdrop. The antique 18th-century mirror adds a touch of elegance to this space.
In the main bedroom, the gorgeous green velvet Bennett Bed is from Stoffer Home. Above the bed is the Tree Tops Series framed art, also found at Stoffer Home. Walls are painted in Simply White OC-117 | Benjamin Moore. A 1960s Persian rug grounds the space.
When designing cabinetry, the designer often recreates details found on antique pieces of furniture. This vanity has elements from a French dresser. The mirrors were sourced from West Elm.

When the weather is pleasant in Michigan, the designer and her family would spend a lot of time here on their covered porch.
