This dream spa-like mountain retreat was custom designed by Vertical Arts Architecture, located in Steamboat Springs, a city in northern Colorado’s Yampa Valley. The owners of this 7,300-square-foot retreat searched for an idyllic place to construct their dream vacation home.
Working closely with the project team, they found the site amidst a prairie field on historic ranch lands to capitalize on the expansive views of the valley below, Steamboat Ski Resort, Emerald Mountain and Rabbit Ears Pass.
The homeowners enlisted Vertical Arts as their full-service architecture, interior design and landscape architecture firm to build their dream spa-like mountain retreat featuring sophisticated, high-level design at every turn.
With 360-degree sweeping mountain vistas, stone walls juxtaposing floor-to-ceiling windows, and outdoor living spaces that rival the interiors, the Flat Top Residence’s strategic site orientation melds the home into the mountainous backdrop, providing privacy and creating an inimitable exterior silhouette.
The layout of the home was crafted to be almost entirely on one level, with a split-level floor plan that accommodates a private living space for the owners’ daughter. Stone wall portals serve as thoughtful transitions between quarters while expansive windows and flush patios offer a seamless transition to outdoor living spaces.
To achieve the desired resort-like feel, Vertical Arts layered cool, elemental materials like Kansas Limestone, floor-to-ceiling glass, blackened steel, stained wood siding and hickory floors with abundant natural light, sleek finishes, textured wall coverings and streamlined furnishings that bring warmth to the space.
What We Love: This spectacular mountain home offers a wonderful retreat for family to gather and enjoy the surrounding prairie land and rugged mountains. Large walls of glass frame views of the breathtaking beauty of the natural landscape while flooding living spaces with light. We are especially loving the floor-to-ceiling limestone fireplace in the living room, open concept floor plan and indoor-outdoor connection.

A lobby-inspired, three-sided Minotti sofa anchors the home’s focal living space with perfectly placed windows and open site lines that frame the valley view. Vertical Arts collaborated on a lighting scheme that strategically illuminates all areas of the home with minimal aesthetic impact and selected prominent, decorative pieces to brighten up the space.
Each of the four guest suites were designed with hospitality in mind and feature individual color palettes, luxurious but minimal furnishings, a coffee bar area, elegant baths and integrated lighting.
This pristine home on the prairie is the result of smart design and years of hard work by Vertical Arts’ fully-integrated team alongside other building partners.
