This spectacular ranch-like home was designed by Tim Cuppett Architects, located on the bank of Shoal Creek, a stream and an urban watershed in Austin, Texas. The design of this structure celebrates both the creekside landscape and the tree canopy, featuring two weathered Douglas fir clad volumes that rise above the creek from a flush limestone plinth.
The wood volumes are connected by a transparent living room bridge which spans a cavern carved into the limestone plinth. From the motor court, one enters the dwelling across an elevated walkway to the front door or descent a staircase into the stone cavern to a covered porch and private entry below. Inside you will find four bedrooms and five-and-a-half bathrooms.

Interior spaces seem to echo the simplicity of the dwelling, scaled for intimate family gatherings, and focused into the tree canopy which shades the site. Interior finishes include a continuation of Douglas fir, distinguished from the weathered exterior by a lye finish, juxtaposed against blackened steel, handmade ceramic tiles, and spare inserts of marble and brass.
What We Love: This rustic ranch-like home features weathered natural materials on the exterior mixed with more refined details on the interior. Large windows capture views of the beautiful tree canopy surrounding this home while blurring indoor-outdoor boundaries. We are loving how the architects carried the same wood material into the interior of this home, adding warmth and harmony.
