Having a functional and well organized pantry with shelves, drawers and pullout baskets are the stuff that kitchens dreams are made of. Just imagine how clutter-free your countertops would be is everything was tucked away so neat and tidy in your kitchen pantry. You can have this customized storage solution with some simple planning.

Pantries can be used to store small appliances such as coffee makers, microwaves and toasters, and some can be outfitted with sinks and small refrigerators. If you are handy, you can build your own pantry in a repurposed closet or hire a closet or kitchen designer to help you transform a space in your kitchen. Tips for organizing your pantry:

  • Go through and purge/throw out old, outdated food.
  • Sort food by boxed and canned foods in separate areas of the pantry.
  • Consider using stacking plastic organizers and label with contents. Use these for cereals, crackers, spaghetti and dried goods.
  • Keep heavy items like bottled water, cans and small appliances on the bottom of the pantry for easy access.

Pro Tip: Barley|Pfeiffer Architects typically recommends 3 depth levels for pantry shelving and storage: 6 inches for canned goods, 12 inches for boxed goods and canisters and 16 inches for small appliances and large storage (dog food, etc.)
