This luxury mountain contemporary home honors its site on Red Mountain in Aspen, Colorado, designed by Charles Cunniffe Architects in collaboration with interiors studio Pembrooke & Ives. Heavy timbers and stone anchor the home onto its site, while expansive glazing helps to frame magnificent mountain vistas and bring in an abundance of natural light.
A mix of modern and mountain was created by combining clean lines with spare natural materials. The beams are 120-year old recycled timbers from an old apple factory in Washington. By mixing the solidness of the materials with the transparency of the glass, a play of new and traditional was created.
To not detract from the view, the designers did not introduce too many materials in the home. When selecting the color palette, they took cues from the home’s architecture, which ranges from creamy beiges to chocolate browns. The beige and gray tones of the great room’s stonework inspired a rug in a similar color palette, while the dark stain of the antique beams is referenced in furnishings such as the dining room table and chairs.
The designers incorporated plenty of winter whites, organic shapes, and only natural materials into the interiors scheme. Indirect lighting was selected to make the spaces glow, where lights play off materials on the walls to create a sense of warmth. Solid colors reflect the clean lines of the furnishings, while rich, textured textiles provide a sense of balance. Layers of cashmere, wool, mohair, and suede keep this residence feeling ultra-warm and luxurious.
