DeForest Architects is responsible for this modern tree house design inspired by it’s hillside site and childhood memories, located in Burien, Washington. Nestled on a one-acre property atop a bluff overlooking the Puget Sound, this family home was designed to feel like a virtual walk in the woods. The exterior facade is clad with durable materials such as Cor-Ten steel, stained cedar shiplap, and painted HardiePlank.
The homeowners are a family of four, who wished to create a home that has a deep connection with the landscape. The overall feel is very tranquil, set into the hillside and surrounded by woods. This three-bedroom, 3,886 square foot home winds along a steep embankment and concludes in a dramatic cantilever. Intimate bedrooms are set into the hillside, along with a glass-wrapped great room that cantilevers over a tree canopy — offering a treehouse-like feel.

What We Love: This modern tree house offers a beautiful open concept to create a harmonious flow and a visual connection with the outdoors. The architects well-devised this home, keeping the main living spaces on the first floor, with the more private bedroom spaces on the second level. Complimenting the homeowner’s artist professions, this home inspires creativity with it’s playful use of color and graphic prints.
