This woodland retreat was designed by Feldman Architecture, located on top of a ridge in the Santa Lucia mountains of Carmel, California. The home is utilized as a weekend getaway, whose design was developed around mature Valley Oak trees, forming a horseshoe-shaped residence. The overall design reflects a traditional ranch house with modern influences.
A courtyard wraps around a central oak tree, while groves of Oak, Madrone, and Redwood trees wrap around the homes perimeter. This modern, nest-like structure is oriented on its site to take advantage of the shade of the oak canopy in the courtyard. It also allows natural light to illuminate the great room, which is located at the rear of the property.
This modernized ranch house showcases contemporary material elements throughout its design. The landscaping is also typical of a ranch style home. One enters into the dwelling through an entry courtyard and into the great room where you are greeted by dramatic landscape views.
The main living spaces flow harmoniously from one to the next—from the kitchen, with expansive windows that offer courtyard views; to the dining room, with walls, on either side, of disappearing glass, creating an outdoor dining pavilion. The circulation of the interior anchors around the central courtyard, providing beautiful, private views.
This woodland retreat also offers guest suites, encompassing a full kitchenette and living room—housed in auxiliary wings that are connected to the main structure by covered walkways.

Comfortable living spaces and durable materials, this is one property that is easy to fall in love with.

“Building materials including pre-weathered corrugated steel cladding, buff limestone walls, and large aluminum apertures, and the interior palette of cedar-clad ceilings, oil-rubbed steel, and exposed concrete floors soften the modern aesthetics into a refined but rugged ranch home,” states the architect.
