Perched atop a rocky coastal promontory overlooking Laguna Beach, California, this relaxing seaside home designed by Horst Architects along with Aria Design embraces its unique oceanfront site. The architectural plan of this residence is based upon the homeowner’s request to have an inviting and comfortable family home along the coast.
A place where they could entertain family and friends while also enjoying the coastal views that surrounds the property. The mild climate enabled the opportunity to seamlessly connect the interior and exterior living spaces of this 9,000 square foot, seven bedroom, eight-and-a-half-bathroom beach house.
The design encompasses a main residence along with a detached guest house, which are interconnected by a a series of courtyards. Native plantings helps to visually connect the various outdoor spaces. The indoor-outdoor boundaries are blurred thanks to the sliding, concealed pocket doors and the continuity of materials used on the interior/exterior.
Material selections were based on the desire to root the structure into the site. Indoor/outdoor living spaces were designed to maintain balance—by creating views with privacy and communal spaces that offer intimacy. Overall the architects created a design that offers a place of meditation, where one can contemplate both ocean and sky.
