A Colorado mountain escape has glorious views of the Rocky Mountains

modern-mountain-home-exterior

This stunning modern mountain escape was designed by Aulik Design Build, located in Old Snowmass, a hidden gem in the Roaring Fork Valley, Colorado. This project required an extremely thoughtful approach to working with the site, which was located on a south-facing slope with panoramic views of the Rocky Mountains.

The homeowners are a Chicago couple that was interested in building a modern mountain home style in an extraordinarily sensitive location. When planning the design of this 5,200-square-foot getaway home, the architects spent a few days on the site in a camper so they could devise the best way to site the dwelling for prime mountain views.

Exterior finishes were selected to meld with the colors of the surrounding landscape: charcoal-colored brick, dark bronze, and taupe stucco, along with Spanish cedar planks that add depth and variegation to the structure.

What We Love: This Colorado mountain escape provides its occupants with an open and airy floor plan with large windows showcasing the most breathtaking views. We are especially loving how the dwelling’s silhouette marries the centuries-old sloped roof pitch of a Gold Rush cabin with streamlined, horizontal overhangs, to give it a contemporary feel with a nod to the traditional vernacular.

What is the square footage? Can I see a plan?

A beautiful home with beautiful views, but one that would be very expensive to heat with all of the expansive glass.

Certainly attractive, beautifully detailed, but looks as cold inside as outside. Maybe it’s the photography.

yes, it is the photography. there is a lot of glazing in the house and the photos were shot on an overcast day when the ambient lighting conditions are cool. what you are seeing is the cool ambient lighting being reflected in the photos.

Given the snowy outsides, the house’s finishes along with the steel framed windows feels incredibly cold and impersonal. Feels institutional like a school, not a home! I normally hate brass fixtures, but this place desperately needs them, and more, to add warmth.
