Rockefeller Partners Architects created this stunning modern home in Mandeville Canyon, a small community in the Brentwood neighborhood of Los Angeles, California. The design of this custom residence was inspired as much by its unique surroundings as by the homeowner’s lifestyle needs. Due to the irregular shape of the property, which includes a small grove of eucalyptus and pine trees, only one of the 3.5 acres was buildable land.
To maximize the views of this 10,000 square foot dwelling, the architects separated it into two wings—north and south—which turns away from the motor court to face a sprawling lawn and beyond to the magnificent canyon vistas. Breaking the structure into smaller parts also helped to reduce the massing, establishing a physical connection with the outdoors; access is available from almost any room. At the heart of the home is a grand fireplace that begins in the living room, penetrating the exterior wall to become a wedge-shaped landscape feature in the pool area.
The homeowners requested for the design of their home to be useful, beautiful and timeless. The style of this modern dwelling pays tribute to the craftsman architecture of the early 1900s, with its originality, simplicity of form, use of natural materials and the visibility of handmade details.
The overall design of this home emulates that of its turn-of-the-century predecessors—offering an aesthetic that is free from opulence and mass-produced housing elements. As with the architecture, the interior design stemmed directly from the homeowner’s desire to create a timeless aesthetic that is warm and comfortable yet refined.
