A Mediterranean style home has been historically restored by Harrison Design in collaboration with builders Giffin & Crane, located in downtown Santa Barbara, California. This project entails a comprehensive preservation of a 120-year-old luxury vacation home, without the help of any original blueprints! The project team began with the replacement of the home’s original boulder foundation. It was replaced with an up-to-code concrete footing, which was concealed with original sandstone.
Over the years, this home had been modified to fit the current owner’s lifestyle needs, yet without any regard for the history of this home. The homeowner’s request was to restore this tattered gem back to her glory days of the 1890’s—yet with some modern conveniences discreetly located. This project was very memorable and rewarding for the design team, taking a total of six years to complete!

On the interior, period features— such as the fireplace mantels and staircase balusters to an upstairs quatrefoil window — were inventoried and temporarily stored. These were re-integrated back into the home while the design team updated the interiors with inconspicuous modern amenities, which included radiant flooring and air conditioning.
Interesting Fact: This home was the winner of the 2015 Edwards/Plunkett Award for Historic Preservation.
What We Love: The design team did a fabulous job of renovating this home so that it could be restored back to its original glory. Beautiful details can be found throughout, from the warm and welcoming furnishings to the textured window treatments and patterned area rugs. We are loving all the meticulous details of the trim, molding, woodwork and even the ceiling—the dining room is fabulous!… Readers, what are your thoughts on the overall design of this home?
