Mountain retreat in Big Sky Country showcases bright, bold interiors

Mountain Retreat Exterior

This modern mountain retreat with fresh, bold interiors was designed by Locati Architects, located in the American Spirit community of the Yellowstone Club in Big SkyMontana. Designed as a family retreat for a family from Chicago, this is the ultimate destination to come and play, with a private golf course and ski resort. The family fell in love with the area’s striking beauty, so they wanted to be able to be able to enjoy all the recreational activities while at the same time have spaces that they could sit back and relax, enjoying the solitude.

The home was designed for skiers, so when it was being built, the design team took into consideration the orientation and and location of the home to reflect the ski lifestyle. To respect the surrounding nature, the home needed to embrace it, by incorporating a palette of natural building materials. This includes an exterior facade clad with cedar shaking, stonework on the fireplaces and reclaimed fir beam and trusses that accent the ceilings in the interiors.

To further connect with nature, almost every room features expansive windows that capture the spectacular forested landscape and mountainous vistas. Interior design firm Denton House Design Studio was brought in to transform the homeowner’s ideas into a sophisticated palette that mixes modern and classic styles. The design took some inspiration from the clients lively hometown, with a concept of ‘Chicago meets the mountains’.

Mountain Retreat-Living Room

Above: The great room can be seen upon entryway into the home, offering expansive views of snow-capped mountains through its picture windows. A subtle color palette and furnishings were selected so as not to detract from the views, while hints of silver and glass mimic the sparkle of snow.

Mountain Retreat-Dining Room

Above: The dining room showcases a stunning live edge walnut slab table with a Lucite base that runs twelve feet in length. The table is complimented by mohair covered chairs in an indigo blue hue. The trapezoidal-shaped console table is a nod to mid-century design. Instead of a piece of art framed on the wall next to the dining table, the forest takes center stage.

What We Love: The feel of this home offers a nice mix of glam, sophistication and a touch of rusticity all rolled into one, creating a wonderful ski in/ski out retreat. The use of reclaimed wood adds a lot of warmth, making this a cozy retreat to enjoy in any season. We bet this would be a spectacular home to retreat to over the holidays! What do you think?

The fireplace is comprised of locally sourced Chief Cliff stone. Attractive looking chevron printed hair-on-hide ottomans supply a place for sitting to enjoy the fire and to take off boots, ski boots and shoes.

Mountain Retreat-Outdoor Living Room

An outdoor living room is an extension of the great room, which can be used for all seasons thanks to drop-down screens and heaters mounted on the ceiling. There is also a nice warm fireplace that can be enjoyed by nestling on comfortable teak furnishings covered with plush cushions.
