This stunning rustic-modern farmhouse was designed by Jeffrey Dungan Architects, located on a large farm in Lowndesboro, Alabama. The project began with an existing cabin of the most humble beginnings and the final product really eclipsed the original structure. On a wonderful working farm, a family spends their days riding horses, exploring the fields around their property, fishing in the large lakes and hunting for wild game.
The new layout of their home enables a much fuller enjoyment of nature for the family and their friends. The look and feel is just as natural as its tranquil setting—stone and cedar shakes with plenty of porches. There is a total of 2,911 square feet of living space, in addition to 1,710 square feet of covered porches. The farmhouse was expanding by surrounding the existing structure with a series of individual living areas. This project was featured in Southern Living, May 2013.

To accommodate large gatherings, the architects expanded the living space, while adding a larger kitchen that offers 180-degree views of the farm. On either side of the living room fireplace, two pairs of French doors were added. These open out to a new porch, which offers a dining area with an outdoor fireplace. The indoor-outdoor connection helped to double the size of the farmhouse’s living space.
On the opposing side of the existing structure, a master wing was added. This includes a shuttered porch, the perfect respite after a long day. Existing and new structures are intermingled by way of a wrap-around porch, which takes its cue from the surrounding horse fence and its railing design. In keeping with the home’s countryside setting, natural materials were selected for both indoors and out. This includes moss-rock stone, cedar shakes, and reclaimed antique oak beams.
What We Love: This spectacular farmhouse now offers more spacious, bright and airy living areas for the family to enjoy with simple additions to the existing structure. The use of natural materials helps to connect the indoor and outdoor living spaces, while the countryside setting offers a peaceful respite to enjoy outdoor living… Readers, please share with us the details of this home that caught your eye in the comments below!

What makes this kitchen special is the bright, open space flooded with light thanks to the custom designed windows. A floating wood shelf and an antler chandelier bring it all home.

The original structure is still there, it has been updated on facade and extended with porches to interconnect. It now provides a more spacious home for the homeowners to enjoy with family and friends.
