Designed by Ehrlich Yanai Rhee Chaney Architects, this 3,000 square foot modern residence is characterized by openness and natural light, confined to a narrow site in the heart of the Venice Beach, California. The main requirement of the young homeowner was to maximize views towards the Pacific Ocean and the surrounding natural environment. There was also a strong desire to maintain a sense of privacy with the home through the creation of a central courtyard. This also enabled outdoor enjoyment within an urban setting.
“The house is like a flower that has pushed up from its dark slot of space in search of the sun.” —architect Michael Webb
“With glass roll-up doors on both sides of the courtyard as well as the front facade, the ground floor allows for views and light to flow uninterrupted through the building,” explains the architects. “By employing raw, honest materials the house responds to the Bohemian grittiness of Venice and blurs the lines between indoors and out.” The two-story facade consists of painted stucco boxes that is separated by a garden, with concrete steps descending into the backyard.
