This Craftsman-style bungalow was designed by Marie Flanigan Interiors, located in Houston Heights, a community in northwest-central Houston, Texas. Nestled on a spacious, light-filled corner lot, this small home constructed in 1921 required an update. The design team began with a facelift to the exterior facade, in addition to installing energy-efficient windows. The project also required an architectural update with square footage enhancements in all the right spaces.
At the front of this home, you are welcomed by a full width porch and a double-gabled roof. On the interior, a bright and airy floor plan features a more spacious kitchen and master bedroom suite. Beautifully crafted interior columns and coffered ceilings adds charm and defines activity areas in this newly open layout, while at the same time unifying them.

The design team faced a couple of challenges when beginning this renovation project. In order to gain extra square footage, the home had to be lifted and set back three feet away from the street due to the city’s setback code. The footprint was then expanded a small amount in every direction. Additionally, to accommodate the longer and broader footprint of the residence, the roof needed to be raised. This changed the facade, creating a more stately aesthetic, while interior spaces appeared more spacious thanks to taller ceilings.
Interesting Facts: This is the designer/builder’s personal family home. They had originally planned to sell the home, however when the brick foundation was laid for the porch columns, the designer had a change of heart. Luckily this was later in the design process, as this alleviated some of the tougher design decisions when you know the home is yours. The designer also found out she was pregnant during the renovation process, which made keeping this home, well, meant to be!
What We Love: This lovely Craftsman-style bungalow offers its inhabitants a renewed family home on both the exterior and interior. The interiors showcase stunning details, with stately columns and coffered ceilings to help delineate spaces in an open layout. White walls serves as a backdrop to the furnishings and accessories, keeping the living spaces feeling luminous and airy… Readers, please share your thoughts on the overall design aesthetic of this renovation project in the comments below!
