An old manor house was completely transformed by SMXL Architects to become an idyllic retreat to escape from work. Lf91 Project Management was responsible for both the direction of the work and the interior design of the project. The property is nestled in the charming setting of Pollença, a lovely town north of Mallorca, Spain. The home was constructed over 150 years ago by a distinguished family that lived on island.
The current owner is the principle of German-based Rahe+Rahe Design, who had purchased the property less than four yeas ago. The home had already been vacated and was in total disrepair. The design team went to work on rehabilitating the property. The designers were tasked with respecting the original architecture and the Majorcan aesthetics.
Preceded by a beautiful courtyard with a swimming pool, the house is separated into three levels: the main living areas are situated on the ground floor. This includes the living room with a comfortable seating area, a dining room, kitchen and a powder bathroom.
The private bedroom areas are spread out over the upper two levels. Another objective for this project was for the homeowner to find here a haven of rest and solitude, away from his intense work life in Bremen, a city in northwestern Germany where he mainly resides. These reasons reaffirmed the commitment to the largeness of spaces and the use of natural materials.
Material elements includes: local sandstone, stained wood ceiling beams and stone flooring are added in public areas; bush-hammered limestone in the bathrooms; and a warm oak flooring combined with hydraulic tiles recovered in the bedrooms.
The walls were painted white to reflect the light that floods the rooms, which are always connected to the outside. The decor responds to a simple aesthetic, with environments that reflect modern comforts. The light wood furniture combined with upholstery in neutral tones are smooth and without flourishments, creating a natural aesthetic.
What We Love: This beautiful old manor house reflects a charming aesthetic with plenty of preserved character to create a wonderful retreat to escape hectic work life. We love how the main living spaces wrap around a central courtyard with a swimming pool, creating an atmosphere of relaxation. This is the perfect home to enjoy a vacation in style and comfort.
Readers, what are your thoughts on this charming renovation? Would this be your ideal vacation retreat?
