An historical sugar factory was converted into an incredible modern loft for a young professional by Standard Studio, positioned along a canal in the city center of Amsterdam, The Netherlands. The design team handled both a complete architectural renovation and interior design of this bachelor pad. Comprised of 1,614 square feet (150 square meters), the original space was closed off and very divided, with no functionality or flow. The design solution was to create an open plan layout with functional spaces that have a loft aesthetic. All walls were torn down and given a fresh update, yet preserved structural details were left intact to keep historical references alive. Exposed wooden beams on the ceiling infuses warmth into the spaces where at the same time creating a sense of nostalgia. In combination with the modern design, the interiors are not only visually pleasing but very harmonious. Material elements incorporated into the structure were pretty basic, with concrete, oiled oak and unfinished hot rolled steel.
The front exterior facade overlooks the Bloemgracht, which means “flower canal”, which can be viewed through luminous glass windows throughout the home. The living room, kitchen and master bedroom with en-suite master bathroom and home office are on one level and on a split level you will find a bar and dining area, perfect for entertaining guests.
