The Orchard Willow Residence is a contemporary three level single family residence designed by Wheeler Kearns Architects, located in Chicago, Illinois. The clients of this fascinating home desired their haven to have plenty of natural light and a seamless connection with the outdoors, while at the same time enjoying some privacy. Nestled next to a schoolyard, the property gets plenty of southern exposure which is unheard in the Chicago area. The architects took advantage of this opportunity for sun exposure while at the same time meeting the demands for privacy. A concrete retaining wall is positioned just above eye level, encompassing the site and allowing for visual privacy while sitting out in the garden. The interior living space is wrapped in glass to diffuse light into the space and allow the homeowners to take advantage of the natural landscape. Floor to ceiling sliding glass panels slide open to help merge the interior with the exterior. Stone flooring extends to the outdoors, creating a visual continuity as a single space. “Above the wooden pavilion, a narrow, copper-clad volume floats on a clerestory band of windows, bringing light deep into the broad living space below,” states the architect.

Wood is accented throughout the home, on the ceilings, walls and bookshelves adding warmth and character to the space. The living room furniture arrangement is positioned to take advantage of the views of nature outside the window. In the kitchen, the white ceiling not only make the space feel taller, but reflects light. Clerestory windows also helps to bring in more light, a big factor on the homeowners wishlist.

The bedrooms features their own private balconies that are recessed to allow for privacy yet still allow plenty of sunlight to penetrate the space. Views are directed away from the schoolyard and towards the city skyline and beautiful sunsets.
