This two story contemporary mountain retreat was designed by Arizona-based Swaback Architects, located in the private community of Martis Camp, near Lake Tahoe, in Truckee, California. The area encompasses 2,177 acres with approximately 653 homesites, offering an abundance of amenities and year-round activities. This impressive luxury getaway was designed for a family of five (the three children are in high school and college), boasting material elements of wood, stone and glass finishes.
“A home for the high Sierra’s that does not fall in line with the traditional regional architecture that mostly is a dark and heavy composition, explains the architects. “Instead, the concept was to celebrate the light and airy feeling of snow and the effects that it can bring to the interiors.” Overall this mountain dwelling exudes an intriguing modern appeal with a surprisingly welcoming feel.
Above: The exterior facade highlights curved rooflines, western red cedar siding and steel shadow boxes around the windows, metal cube panels and stone pillars. A tall vertical rectangle encased with glass frames the dramatic central staircase, illuminated in the evening by an array of ball lights. The cubes were a design feature of the home, alternating from a COR-TEN steel panel to a painted product to a hot-rolled steel design. The hot-rolled steel was rusted on-site, using EasyRust. There are a total of 400 panels used on facade of this home—350 of which are custom fabricated and bended on-site.
What We Love: This gorgeous contemporary mountain retreat offers open and airy living spaces that are perfect for entertaining family and friends. Unique design details are featured on both the exterior and interior, creating a lasting impression. Walls of curved glass in the great room helps to frame the views of the golf course and surrounding rugged mountains… Readers, what are your thoughts on this home, do you find it to be warm and inviting?
Note: Have a look at another home tour that we featured here on One Kindesign from the wonderful portfolio of Swaback Partners: Spectacular modern home embraces the desert landscape.
