Hillside haven in San Anselmo designed to connect with rugged surroundings

contemporary-exterior

Located in San Anselmo, California, this hillside haven is a modern space that is rich with color, texture and light, designed by House + House Architects. Intimately connected with the surrounding environment, this 3,500 square foot two story home showcasesย incredible views of Mt. Tamalpais. Some of the most noteworthy aspects of this home include polished concrete floors throughout, concrete countertops, an Olympic distance lap pool, and a sixty ton concrete bridge over a seasonal creek.

This home was built on a site that was said to be un-buildable, as with many projects in Marin County, there are often numerous challenges. This particular site had a limited flat area, so the architects devised a plan to integrate the home into the hillside. This helped to create a level entry garden/courtyard. A colored concrete walkway takes one from the detached garage, through the landscaped entry garden and up to the front door.

Interior designerย Jay Jeffers selected a color palette of serene greens, blues and yellows as a backdrop for vintage furnishings and custom pieces. “Anigre cabinetry, granite counters, hand blown glass pendant lights and stainless steel appliances provide an elegant palette of materials,” states the designers.

What We Love: This hillside haven has so much to offer, fantastic architecture, modern, clean lines and open and airy living spaces. The architects did an amazing job of connecting this home to the landscape, both in its design and with the use of windows to capture the views. A soothing color palette not only makes this home comfortable and relaxing, but further helps to not detract one from the views… Readers, please share with us what design features you like or do not like about this home in the Comments below!

Several areas connect with outdoor decks withย perforated steel railings, helping to blur the lines between indoors and out. Soaring ceilings and skylights helps to create open and airy living spaces that seem to flow from one to the next. The living room features clerestory windows that allows additional daylight to filter through, while expansive glass doors offers access to the deck.

Perhaps it is meant to be this way, but I find the home to be an unusual juxtaposition of traditional. mid-century and modern design. I am sure the owners love it, but I find us somewhat disquieting.
