This modern mountain retreat, designed by Design Associates Architects, is situated in Jackson Hole, a valley between the Gros Ventre and Teton mountain ranges in Wyoming. The current design trend features large windows, soaring ceilings, and bright white walls, helping a home feel bright, airy, and fresh. It helps to create a peaceful and comfortable living environment. The homeowner appreciated this concept, but wished to expand on it.
Living spaces needed to be open and spacious, with expansive windows and tall ceilings, and everything had to flow harmoniously from room to room. Despite this request not being novel, the scale was not. She wanted the rooms to be larger than anything built in this region for a home of this size, 5,000 square feet.
This presented the architects with a design challenge: to create a spacious room with 10-foot ceilings and balance the architecture to an appropriate scale where the occupants would live comfortably and not feel like a tiny person in a large room.

This goal was achieved in the double-volume great room, where floor-to-ceiling windows create the illusion of an endless space. To create balance, the architects installed dark-stained wood ceiling trusses and a dramatic chandelier to define the ceiling and prevent it from feeling compressed. The space offers a peaceful atmosphere, being the only room in the home with a vaulted ceiling, which lends it a sense of prominence.
The design of this home focused on creating wide-open living spaces in a mid-sized home, rather than creating a large, mega-mansion. The finished result is a warm and inviting escape with plenty of space to live comfortably and entertain in style.
What We Love: The design of this Wyoming mountain retreat capitalizes on its breathtaking location, soaking in the views through large windows. An open and airy floor plan layout makes this house feel spacious, especially with its voluminous ceilings. Overall, the project team did an outstanding job of collaborating with the homeowner to create her dream retreat—a serene space where she can relax, unwind, and connect with the beauty of nature.
