Kirley Architects, together with Classic Colonial Homes, has designed this warm and inviting modern farmhouse for an active family of five, located in Wilmington, Vermont. The owners wanted a new farmhouse compound on a property that the family had long owned.
Nestled among rolling hills, the site posed several challenges, including significant ledge, slope, and strong seasonal winds. These proved to be a small price to pay for arguably some of the best views in the valley. The project team collaborated closely with the owners to create three uniquely distinctive structures designed to fit seamlessly into the surrounding historic community.

A balance of authenticity and durability was carefully weighed in the selection of materials, which include reclaimed native stone, standing seam metal roofing, reclaimed barn board, and cement-based horizontal siding.

TOUR THE RUSTIC BARN

This reclaimed Barn is a timber frame high-drive barn with a three-car garage on the lower level and a drive-in second floor.

Sometimes the simplest of materials can create the richest designs. The New Rustic Barn is a test case in theory, bringing together a multitude of reclaimed materials, including stone, barn board, steel, and timber. This completely custom design started from the layout and organization of the timber-framed structure at its core.

Barns like this were historically known as “Bank Barns” due to their location at the transition of a steep on-site area of grade. The barn sits into the “bank,” allowing for a two-story structure with an upper entrance on one side and a lower one on the other.

The barn is connected to the main structure via a subterranean tunnel that doubles as an incredible wine cave. The upper workshop and car storage area capture sweeping views of the Vermont landscape to the South.
