Tim Barber Architects is responsible for designing this stunning urban farmhouse in Venice Beach, a neighborhood of the City of Los Angeles within the Westside region of Los Angeles County, California. Renowned for its carefree spirit and eclecticism, Venice proved the perfect place for a young creative couple to build an untraditional forever home.

In a nod to the neighborhood’s bohemian vibe, we used a unique mix of simple materials like steel and glass partitions, reclaimed timber beams, distressed wood cabinets, concrete, and whitewashed shiplap to distinguish each room in the open floor plan. Outside, we dressed familiar agrarian shapes in traditional materials like wood, corrugated steel, standing seam roofs, and hog wire, all unconventionally arranged to add whimsy and modernity to this tradition-informed design.
What We Love: This Venice Beach house offers its inhabitants warm, inviting living spaces with coastal chic accents throughout. Natural textures and a muted palette enhance the relaxed vibe, while vintage and modern elements blend seamlessly. It’s a fresh take on urban farmhouse style that is perfectly suited to its beachside setting. We especially love the kitchen with its spacious walnut-topped island, exquisite pendant lights, and custom metal hood with brass strapping.
