Designed by DeForest Architects, this stunning modern Tudor home in Seattle, Washington, is a beautiful transformation of a modest brick Tudor into a sophisticated, light-filled residence. A couple who love books and dogs had admired this home for years before purchasing it, and the renovation was built entirely around their passions.

Bookshelves and inviting reading nooks woven throughout, modern steel windows and doors that flood the interiors with natural light, and a breathtaking exterior facade that overlooks beautiful Lake Washington. This award-winning project took first place at the Northwest Design Awards.

Above: The brick and mortar were from Mutual Materials. Brick: Stratford 2-1/2″x3-1/2″x7-1/2″ New Used. Mortar: “Castle White” with approximately 1lb of “Buff” per 90lb sack. The roof is Taylor Roofing in dark bronze. The timbers are painted in Benjamin Moore Bittersweet Chocolate (2114-10). The stucco is an integral plaster color available through local stucco contractors.

What We Love About This Home

This beautiful Tudor home was fully renovated to offer its inhabitants warm and comfortable living spaces. Bookshelves are abound in this home, inviting one to curl up with a good book while enjoying the company of dogs. We are loving everything about this home; the architecture of the exterior facade is simply stunning.

Above: Walls and ceilings are painted in Benjamin Moore Linen White throughout. The coffee table is the O Series Coffee Table by Antoine Proulx. The sectional was custom-made in collaboration with Village Interiors, Seattle. Behind the sectional is a swing door with two sidelites — similar doors and windows are made by Dynamic, Hopes, and others. The built-in cabinet is by Woodway Woodworks & Cabinetry. The hand-knotted wool rug was purchased at Driscoll-Robbins in Seattle. The light fixture is the Crosscross Pendant from Boyd Lighting. The dog bed fabric is from Perennials outdoor fabrics.

Modern Tudor Kitchen and Breakfast Nook

Above: The tab pulls on the kitchen cabinets are from Mockett. The countertop is a honed quartz countertop from Pental in “Canyon.” The banquette cushions are leather with an oak and steel base structure. The windows are Marvin windows with lead strips added to the interior. Where strips were needed on both sides, Dynamic windows were used for a more realistic leaded glass appearance.

The mirrors are custom steel angle frames. Sconces are Carbon Canyon Sconces by Marian Jaimieson. The tub is an Iris Cast Iron Bath #2155 by Cheviot Products. Baseboards are stained white oak set flush with the drywall.

Beautiful. What color are the timber beams above the brick. The ones that are embeded in the stucco? Is that the BM Bittersweet Chocolate? It looks lighter. Wondering if that is glare or a different color??

“Tudor home with modern twist” should be called “not-very-Tudor modern home”. This house has minimal Tudor trappings – a few smatterings of faux timber beams above the exterior brick cladding, a few gables, some nine-paned windows, and a decent fireplace. But the Tudor-ness is downplayed, sterilized, and incomplete. It’s many of the things that suggest a Tudor home…without any of the fun of a Tudor home. Tudor and Modern are like oil and water to begin with. But if these architects hoped to reinvent the Tudor home, they ended up unintentionally mocking it. And to top it off, the fake… Read more »

@ Name Withheld, what a hateful comment. Tudor homes are absolutely magnificent but lets face it – unless updated on their interiors their beauty ends at the point where you step inside them and close the front door behind you. In this day and age 99% of the interiors of these age old beauties definitely needs to be redone. I’m a big fan of architects and interior designers that revive and brighten them creatively even with faux timber, stone or laminate – which is what “adding a modern twist” to them implies.
