This midcentury modern home, reimagined by Graham Architecture, in partnership with Hill Construction Company, is tucked into the Woods Cove neighborhood, a hidden gem in Laguna Beach, California. Often overshadowed by Laguna’s more famous stretches, Woods Cove captivates those in the know with its rugged cliffs, secret tide pools, and breathtaking oceanfront vistas, providing a serene coastal escape that feels both private and timeless.
Built in 1961 and designed by famed Architect J. Herbert Brownell, this remodel honors the original structure while showcasing the homeowner’s passion for world travel, culture, and artifacts. The design of this two-story dwelling was inspired by the owner’s visits to the Schindler House and the Eames House — both of which demonstrate how modest scale can be impactful. Several details were employed from the Schindler Frame, including floor-to-ceiling ribbon windows, a clerestory window, deep overhangs, and a low horizontal profile with varying ceiling heights.
Nestled on a half-acre of property, this home is perched on the coastline and surrounded by lush greenery. The project team was tasked with transforming this home to embrace indoor-outdoor living, while also reflecting the owner’s passion for nature and the tranquil surroundings. Japanese-inspired details can be found throughout this home, creating a Zen-like feel. One enters into the home through a shou sugi ban gate.
What We Love: This serene midcentury modern home is full of rich, multi-layered textures that provide an idyllic backdrop for a beautiful collection of antiques. There is a strong connection to the outdoors throughout this home, courtesy of large windows and sliding glass doors. We are especially loving the Japanese vibe throughout this home, providing a sense of tranquility.
