A rustic Colorado mountain home in the tranquil San Juan National Forest

rustic western mountain home exterior

Veritas Fine Homes has designed this gorgeous, rustic Western mountain home, situated in the San Juan National Forest, Durango, Colorado. The design of this dwelling was inspired by and designed around its family heirloom Douglas Fir beams. These timbers came from an industrial building built by the homeowner’s great-grandfather in the Midwest.

The stunning Douglas Fir wood featured in this home was harvested in the late 1800s, enhancing the rustic Western style by balancing masculine tones with natural beauty, rich textures, and organic warmth. All finishes were left in their most natural state. Beams were lightly wire-brushed and clear-coated to highlight the centuries of time-tested character. The countertops were leather-finished, and reclaimed barn wood was incorporated into the cabinets, accent walls, and exterior siding.

The integration of natural stone brings the comfort of natural surroundings both inside and outside. The expression of iron was also imperative to the owner’s decorative details. To that end, you’ll find splashes of decorative detailing throughout this authentic Rocky Mountain home.

It’s beautiful, but who can afford it? Land out here costs an arm and a leg, much less construction costs! Colorado is becoming home to rich Californians and ordinary people struggle to afford to live here.

I built those stairs and every piece of timber work in that house. Nobody from Veritas touched a single piece of that heirloom lumber. Give credit where it is due.
