The Frog Pond Farm Barn is an adaptive reuse project by architect Serge Young, named by the owners after they found a pond full of frogs on the property. This was a two-part project. Part one entailed the addition of a great room and screened porch to a house nestled into a hillside in rural Dutchess County, in the Hudson Valley, New York. The sloped grade limited options for the addition and required some extensive site work.
This was part two of the project, which transforms an aging barn into a refined, multi-functional pool house while preserving its agrarian character. The ground level contains a garage, powder room, and flexible lounge that doubles as a potting space.

Severely deteriorated framing required complete reconstruction of the loft floor, allowing the new structure to integrate within the historic shell. Window openings were carefully reconfigured to increase light and frame northern views toward the pool, balancing preservation with reinvention through close collaboration between owner, architect, and builder.

What We Love About This Barn House
Frog Pond Farm Barn transforms a historic structure into a dynamic, multi-level retreat, blending old-world character with modern functionality. The soaring double-height gathering space and reimagined loft celebrate the barn’s original volume while introducing light, views, and versatility. Every detail, from repurposed hay loft framing to thoughtfully placed windows, reveals a creative balance between preservation and reinvention.

Note: Check out a couple of other barn house transformation projects that we have showcased here on One Kindesign: 100-year-old barn home gets restored to its former glory in Dutchess County and 1880s Barn gets beautifully converted into a modern home in Upstate New York.

The second floor serves as a gathering and art display room with an adjacent sleeping room and bath. A portion of the former hayloft was removed to create a dramatic double-height space, bringing daylight deep into the structure. The remaining loft accommodates a compact office and exercise area.
