Epic North Carolina mountain house draws inspiration from Japanese pavilions

Japanese-inspired mountain house exterior

Harding Huebner Architects, in collaboration with Alchemy Design Studio, has created Raven Cliff, a Japanese-inspired mountain house in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Asheville, North Carolina. At the homeowners’ request, the design of this dwelling is inspired by the long, low forms of traditional Japanese pavilions.

Deep roof overhangs, landscape walls made of board-formed concrete, and lush landscaping help to diminish the scale of this 5,900-square-foot residence. Continue below to see the rest of this spectacular home tour…

In response to the challenges of a steeply sloping site, the home gracefully follows along the contours of the topography, choreographing movement that is gradually revealed as you move through.

The floor-to-ceiling windows bring the drama of the long-range views up close, but the small moments of reflection, quiet, relaxation, and respite unfold as the house becomes home.

One such quiet moment of reflection is only revealed as you move from the public spaces toward the privacy of the primary bedroom suite. The traditional Japanese garden serves as a living work of art, only to be seen, but not occupied.

What We Love: This Japanese-inspired home is surrounded by lush landscaping and the most breathtaking views. Clean lines and modern details on the interior help to not detract from the sweeping views over the Blue Ridge Mountains. We especially love the owner’s bedroom suite, with its picture window and built-in office desk that helps to inspire creativity. The spa-like bathroom, complete with a soaking tub, feels equally decadent, offering a perfect retreat for relaxation.
