Q Architecture + Design, together with Tara Lenney Design, was commissioned to construct a beautiful, modern, treehouse-inspired home built on stilts above the Mountain Fork River in Broken Bow, Oklahoma. This modern-rustic cabin retreat offers its inhabitants four bedrooms, four and a half bathrooms, and plenty of space for lounging and entertaining, surrounded by the Ouachita forest.

Construction of this stunning cabin was already underway, but when the owners looked at the surrounding rental homes and the furniture inside them, they knew this investment needed something more curated. That’s where Tara Lenney Design entered the picture, taking what was essentially a beautifully designed blank canvas and running with it.

Inspired by the raw beauty of the woods and river just outside their door (and the owner’s passion for fly fishing), the designer drew heavily on natural materials, textures, and colors to create a home that feels immediately inviting and stunning. Not too fussy to curl up on the sofa after a day spent outdoors. Beautiful enough to serve as the backdrop for weekend getaways, anniversaries, and momentous occasions for years to come.

A Warm, Story-Filled Entryway

Entryway wall with nature-themed gallery art, live-edge coat rack, wire wall basket, and upholstered bench

From the moment you cross the wooden bridge and step inside, the details make this space deeply personal. A collection of pinned vintage prints in the mudroom immediately signals the design direction, nature, fly fishing, and the wild outdoors. A tiny fishing fly is even attached to one of the matted art prints.

Hallway with framed textile art, powder room with botanical fern wallpaper, and wood-trimmed doorways

An antique card catalog, the designer’s personal favorite piece in the entire home, sits across from the gallery wall, perfect for stowing fishing flies and small treasures. The clients had been saving wine corks for years, so Tara commissioned a textural work of art made from those very corks, framed in acrylic so you can appreciate the depth from every angle. It’s a conversation-starter and an heirloom all at once.

The powder bath got an upgrade from standard wallpaper to this lush, fern-filled botanical print that adds so much character to the small space. The wood vanity, marble countertop, and a petite pink vase finish off the room perfectly.

A Jaw-Dropping Living Room With River Views

Stepping into the main living area is, as the designer puts it, a bit of a jaw-dropper. Soaring wood ceilings wrap the room in warmth, while wall-to-wall windows look straight out over the Mountain Fork River below. A cream-colored stone fireplace (a key swap from the original dark gray/brown stone in the plans) extends to the ceiling, beautifully anchoring the room.

Earthy ochres, mossy greens, warm creams, and cool blues, nature’s own palette, are woven into every room of this modern treehouse-inspired home.

Vaulted pine ceilings, a soaring cream stone fireplace, and an artful chandelier make an immediate impression.

White sofas keep the space feeling bright and airy against the warm wood, while layered natural textures, such as woven throws, a wood coffee table, ceramic vessels, and brass candlesticks, add depth. The four framed prints flanking the fireplace are especially storied, as they once lived in the Library of Congress in the 1890s.

What We Love About This Home

Perched above the river like a modern treehouse, this Broken Bow retreat feels effortlessly connected to its natural surroundings, with warm textures and earthy tones that echo the woods just beyond its walls. Every detail strikes a balance between elevated design and laid-back comfort, equally suited for quiet mornings lounging or hosting unforgettable weekend escapes. It’s a home that not only looks beautiful but lives beautifully, offering a timeless backdrop for everyday moments.

A Workhorse Kitchen & Custom Dining Table

The kitchen and dining area are just as beautiful to look at as they are hard-working. A custom-made 12-foot dining table was built to rival the nearby kitchen island — the perfect surface for the family gatherings this home was designed around. Statement black pendant lights replaced the contractor’s original tiny white ones, which were doing nothing for a room of this scale.

A Staircase Worth Pausing On

The open-riser staircase with its black metal railings is flanked by one of the home’s most beloved pieces — an antique multi-drawer card catalog that once held library cards but now serves as a perfect repository for the owner’s fly fishing collection. Cozy Bedrooms That Feel Like a Private Retreat

Each bedroom features a small seating area so guests can sit back and appreciate the surrounding nature. The layering technique used throughout, comforter over quilt, varying pillows, and sculptural art, makes every room feel as curated and luxurious as a living room.

The Loft: A Charming Nook Above It All

The loft was not originally in the plans, just a small landing at the top of the stairs. But the homeowners seized the opportunity during construction to expand the space into a full room, making it one of the home’s most charming areas. A tan leather sofa, white chaise lounges, a display cabinet filled with curated objects, an olive tree, and an oversized coffee table (chosen specifically to accommodate puzzle-building) make this a retreat within a retreat. A sleeper sofa adds bonus sleeping capacity for overflow guests.

The Bunk Room: A Moody, Playful Favorite

Perhaps the most beloved room in the entire cabin is the bunk room. When the original plan for built-in bunks fell through, Tara’s team designed a furniture solution that became a stunner in its own right. The designer pushed hard for a deep, moody olive-green wall color, and the result is a room that feels like a cozy little tackle shop meets summer camp cabin. Antler mounts on hand-painted shields, a tribal runner rug, layered vintage nature prints, and seersucker bedding complete the look.

Outdoor Living That Rivals the Interior

The outdoor spaces are where the clients spend most of their time — and it’s easy to see why. Multiple covered decks and porches step right out over the trees and the river below. The design embraces the natural surroundings with a contrast of modern structure and comfortable, durable furniture suited to a life spent outdoors.
