Designed by KT2 Design Group together with Opaline Interiors Studio, this modern Scandinavian house in Vermont features a wall of windows that takes in sweeping views of the Green Mountains. The team collaborated with an active, growing family to design their second home on a beautiful mountain top. Having rented houses in the area for years, the family loved Vermont year-round—skiing in winter, summers at the lake, and fall hikes amid technicolor leaves.
They envisioned a home that would support seasonal adventures and be perfect for entertaining. The interiors balance the home’s modern architecture with a quintessential New England sensibility and a touch of glamour, designed to gather large groups in intimate rooms with expansive views and to comfortably accommodate 18 guests. Scandinavian Design in Vermont
Inspired by modern Scandinavian design, the architect composed the house from simple, repetitive volumes with steep, peaked rooflines that feel cozy while shedding heavy New England snow. Inside, varied room scales balance lofty gathering spaces and expansive windows with more intimate areas that frame cinematic lake-and-mountain views.

Above: Scandinavian-style peaks that mirror each other create an inviting, more intimate scale than a single large volume. The knotty western red cedar siding adds warmth.

A Vermont Retreat with Cozy Cottage Charm
This Vermont escape blends modern design with cozy cottage appeal, featuring open yet intimate spaces and neutral, family-friendly interiors. Built on a steep hillside, it accommodates the couple’s children and frequent guests while maintaining a warm, inviting vibe.

What We Love About This Home
This modern Scandinavian house beautifully balances modern Scandinavian architecture with cozy cottage warmth, pairing dramatic mountain views with inviting, thoughtfully scaled interiors. Steeply pitched rooflines, natural materials, and light-filled gathering spaces make it equally suited for lively weekends or quiet seasonal escapes. We love everything about this home, from the striking exterior facade to the impeccably designed living spaces, especially the adorable bunk bedrooms. What an amazing escape for the kids and adults alike!

Above: In the powder room, a textured 700-pound cow trough sink was imported from France and secured by steel beams that extend to the home’s foundation.

Above: The dining room showcases a striking textural contrast: industrial-style chains from the Lucent Lightshop chandelier add weight, while alabaster globes bring a touch of glamour.

Above: The living room is defined by soaring ceilings. Large windows frame breathtaking views while inviting in an abundance of natural light.

Above: In the kitchen, rift- and quarter-sawn oak creates a cohesive look. Wooden ceiling beams designed by Ten Brinke enhance the warm, cozy atmosphere in this space.

Above: The mudroom, crafted from plain-sawn rustic-grade oak, features an island designed to echo the cubbies of a classic ski lodge.

Above: In the owner’s bedroom, a red and blue antique rug grounds the space.

Above: In the owner’s bath, wood floors and paneling create a cozy feel, complemented by a tub surrounded in Calacatta Bluette marble.

Above: The kid’s bunk bedrooms (there are two in this home) each feature different colors. This one is the Fox in the Snow wallpaper in the colorway ‘Scots’, sourced from Lake August.

Above: Niches were integrated into the walls above the queen beds in lieu of nightstands.

Above: This A-framed guest bedroom offers a wondrous view, yet its scale and materials feel cozy and inviting.
