Ironwood Studio Co. has reimagined this family beach house in Westport, Massachusetts, transforming it into a classic yet whimsical and fun vacation home. The goal of this project was to turn an outdated property into a highly functional, welcoming, and relaxing retreat that meets the lifestyle needs of a family of five.
This three-bedroom and two-and-a-half-bathroom dwelling was reimagined and reconfigured, adding a new laundry/mudroom/ drop zone to enhance the family’s quality of living. Additionally, the kitchen and bathrooms were completely updated with custom millwork, and brand-new furnishings were selected to decorate the living spaces, all while staying within their budget.
Above: The front door color is Newburyport Blue HC-155 by Benjamin Moore. The foyer walls are painted in Iceberg 2122-50 and the trim and ceiling is White Dove, both by Benjamin Moore. The floors throughout the main level are oak, which was original to the home and restored with a medium brown stain.

Above: In the dining room, the walls are grooved paneling, 8-inch on-center. They are composed of MDF boards that come pre-primed.
What We Love: From reconfiguring the floor plan to layering in new furnishings, this Massachusetts beach house is now optimized for functionality and has greatly improved the family’s lifestyle. The home now offers a relaxed living environment and a soothing coastal color scheme of white, blue, and gray. We love the materials used throughout, from the fish scale tiles in the kitchen to the reclaimed wood and shiplap-like paneling. So many fabulous details!

Above: This sitting room is open to the dining room, where continuity can be seen with the coffered ceilings and shiplap-like walls. French doors open out to a deck, which offers idyllic water views.
Above: This welcoming deck offers views of the harbor, along with shelter from an overhead balcony from the owners’ bedroom. Mature growth oak trees add a feeling of intimacy to this outdoor oasis.

Above: The custom vent hood is composed of walnut. Underneath the hood are fish-scale patterned tiles in shades of blue. The cabinets are called “Schrock”, semi-custom cabinets installed by MasterBrand Cabinets.
Above: The family room walls are painted in Iceberg 2122-50 by Benjamin Moore. A stretched canvas framed with reclaimed wood was commissioned by artist Peter Pereira. Grounding this space is a jute area rug, adding texture underfoot.
Above: An upstairs hallway features photographs by artist Adam Katz, framed with antique frames sourced from a local flea market. The hues in the artwork inspired the wall color. On the floor, the original carpeting was torn out and replaced with luxury vinyl wood-look planks.
Above: The palm leaf wallpaper of the main bedroom adds an eye-catching accent to this space, sourced from Serena and Lily.
Above: This serene space features a pair of swivel chairs, enabling the owners to enjoy the seaside views. Glass doors open out to a private balcony, an idyllic spot to enjoy a morning coffee or an evening cocktail while watching the sunset.
Above: The girls’ bathroom has a touch of whimsy, with the whale wallpaper. It’s called Melville Wallpaper from Serena & Lily. Tucked into an alcove, the mango wood chest offers additional storage.
Above: In this cozy and inviting guest bedroom, a pair of coral prints on the wall inspired the color scheme of this space. The walls are painted in Skylight 1214 – Sherwin Williams. The furniture is from Pottery Barn. It’s the Sausalito Collection in Seadrift. The bedding is from Serena & Lily. At the end of the bed, a vintage Brazilian shipping crate was spotted at a yard sale.

Above: This mudroom entry is a drop zone, featuring a built-in salvaged wood bench and plenty of cabinet storage. On the floors, the designer selected a material that appears like slate, yet is much simpler to clean — Palazzo 12″ x 24″ Decorative Tile in Castle Graphite, sourced from Bedrosians Tile & Stone.
Above: A bonus room over the garage was transformed into a hangout room for the couple’s daughters. A closet has been converted into a nook, with a daybed covering up the HVAC ducts and pipes. Charming nautical vibes can be found in the Marine wall light from Visual Comfort and porthole-like mirror.
A detached guest cottage on the property was also completely updated, featuring a rooftop deck and accordion doors that open out to the magnificent ocean views. It offers the ultimate space to entertain family and friends.
Above: The guest cottage boasts views of the harbor. Originally this structure had a high roof that blocked views of the water from the main residence. It was replaced with a lower roof so both structures could enjoy the heavenly seaside views.
