Fluidesign Studio, together with Structural Dimensions, has created this gorgeous lakeside farmhouse situated in Mahtomedi, a suburb of St. Paul, Minnesota. Nestled on a half-acre wooded site, this beautiful residence encompasses 2,400 square feet with five bedrooms and three bathrooms. Designed for a family with three children, the home’s idyllic lakefront setting provides the opportunity to enjoy summer activities… and winter too, when the lake is frozen over!
Lush gardens and a wraparound porch welcome visitors to this charming home, whose design approach was to appear as if it had always existed on the property. Additional farmhouse-style characteristics on the exterior facade include dormers on the roof, custom-designed corbels on the gables, and cutout shakes. In the interiors, the design team emphasized quality over size, focusing on comfort, beauty, and details.

Cedar was used for the porch steps and front entryway, adding a rustic warmth that is very welcoming. Due to extremely harsh winter weather, the architects decided to use engineered wood siding on the exterior facade. The materials offer incredible durability and moisture protection.

What We Love About This Home
This lakeside farmhouse was designed for casual living, brimming with personality and small details that make this house a home. The beautiful earth tones on the walls and pops of color in the accessories create a feeling of tranquility. This home’s color scheme successfully draws on its surroundings for inspiration. Our favorite space? The screened-in porch, an ideal spot to spend lazy summer days and enjoy nature during the cold winter months.

Above: In keeping with the farmhouse style aesthetic, shiplap was installed on the walls, while the flooring features 6-inch white oak. The staircase leads to an unfinished basement level below, offering 1,000 square feet of living space. Future plans include converting part of the space into a guest bedroom and bathroom.

Above: A sophisticated living room features a neutral color palette, a stone-clad fireplace, and a gas insert (True Series by Heat & Glo) that appears similar to a wood-burning fireplace. Built-ins provide functional storage space, while a tall built-in cabinet to the right of the fireplace conceals a swivel-mounted television. The wall color is Abingdon Putty HC-99 | Benjamin Moore.

Above: The center island has a craftsman’s vibe, exuding an authentic, older-home feel. The material is stained, quarter-sawn oak, featuring large drawers and an integrated microwave.

Above: Off the dining room, a wraparound porch faces the lake. It was designed so that screens can be installed between the columns, making it an all-season porch.

Above: The mudroom features Montauk black slate flooring and a bench sourced from Joss & Main. The space was designed so that each of the three children has their own space to store gear and hang coats. Love the sign hanging from the hook!

Above: The wall color in the master bathroom is Mindful Gray SW 7016 by Sherwin-Williams. The vanity was purchased at Home Depot and made more rustic by applying a glaze and adding hardware. The floor tile has a barnwood aesthetic.
