Battle Associates Architects, in collaboration with Wood & Clay, has designed this stunning lakeside cottage situated in Alton, a quaint town in Belknap County, New Hampshire. Nestled into the landscape of a former cottage colony, this large family getaway is the embodiment of rustic charm.
Inside, black iron accents on structural timbers, butternut paneling, and hand-scraped oak and teak flooring create a warm, cozy space. Several screened porches, some with sophisticated canvas awnings to extend the season, provide multiple options for privacy or gatherings.

Outside, the unique blend of cut stone arches and grotto, bark and skirl siding, and substantial yet subtle hardscape all meld perfectly into their natural surroundings. Look out the window at the similarly subdued boathouse tucked into the shore, and appreciate the contented feeling of being surrounded by nature with all the comforts of home.
This lakeside property features several outbuildings, which allowed the team to experience different scales in various parts of the project. Strict limitations kept some elements small and low, while the main house could be bolder.
What We Love: This family escape on the lake boasts a dreamy exterior facade set against an idyllic backdrop of forest and water. We love so many elements inside this beautiful home, from the warmth of the wood to the meticulous craftsmanship and windows in all the right places to capture the views. The floor-to-ceiling stone fireplace in the great room is exquisite. What a wonderful spot to gather throughout the seasons, thanks to the comfortable furnishings and open connection to the kitchen, which makes entertaining a breeze.
